GOAL: Show the importance of the figure-ground principle in graphic design by playing with spatial planes.
The Activating Figure Ground to Make Multiple Planes project was meant to teach students the figure-ground principle. Initially, the project was completed in black and white before being translated into color.
Initially, this project involved manual work, cutting circles from black and white paper. The objective was to create a composition with four planes per layer that would seamlessly connect to the previous layer, resulting in a total of five layers. After approval of the black-and-white composition, the next step was to introduce color variation. This involved using at least three different hues, ranging from light to dark, with each plane in the composition assigned a distinct color.
